CHARCO is an episode of a larger project,The Machine of Horizontal Dreams (2023), by Pepa Ubera, a new full-length performance installation that looks at decoding narratives of progress. For this new iteration of CHARCO, Pepa has been working with the sculptures of Miriam Austin and set design by Leila Arenou.

In 19th century New Zealand, artist Miriam Austin’s great-great-grandmother, Irish-born Annie Kelly, was selected along with her husband to help found a new town in the New Zealand bush. Although they contributed to establishing a new settlement, Annie’s husband never managed to build a house, so she raised her children in a tent.

I understand you relocated to Paris from Rome earlier this year, what prompted this move? How have you settled into Parisian life in the middle of a pandemic? I have a long love story with Paris going back to when I applied for the Beaux-Arts at 18 and was told to do a foundation course. I had my first solo show last year with Galerie Chloe Salgado, and other opportunities and connections that made me want to give Paris a go. It’s a weird time to be here, but I was offered to take over a friend’s studio at the new studio complex Poush Manifesto. It’s got the energy of a residency, and there’s a good community of artists and makers. Life feels a bit less isolating thanks to this.

The kitschest of pink flowers is dragged back and forth along a pebbledashed wall. As it rounds a corner, we catch a flash of grass and the edges of east London’s Brutalist icon Balfron Tower in the background, before the camera pans out and we see a man’s hand guide it back on its bizarre journey around Ernő Goldfinger’s 1960s creation. Eventually, the twee protagonist is calmly smashed to bits in a lift by a duffle-coated, bearded figure who has more than a whiff of the art student about him.
