In this exhibition Madeline Hollander presents movement scores and notations that illustrate her process of creating performance works. These works on paper were made by Hollander during the initial research stages and represent a range of recent performances including Arena and NY Competition, NY. This 10-day exhibition stands as a continuation of an ongoing discussion between the gallery and Hollander surrounding the production of performance work within a gallery context, the archive of ephemeral art forms, and copyrighted movement sequences. In May 2017, Bosse & Baum hosted a week-long panel discussion to further examine these topics, conducted through the case study of the artist, Madeline Hollander, and the development of her new performance work, 65°F (18.3°C).

Madeline Hollander is a New York based artist who works primarily with performance and video to explore how human movement and body-language negotiate their limits within everyday systems of technology, intellectual property law, and mass-culture. Hollander works with dancers, non-dancers, video and found objects to compose movement sequences and environments that investigate the formation of new body languages generated by the evolution of interface design, ergonomics, and mediated daily rituals. Hollander’s work undermines the notion of time and/or any definitive start or finish, and illuminates the contradictions inherent in the documentation/archive of ephemeral art forms.

Hollander has danced professionally with Los Angeles Ballet, CA, and Barcelona Ballet, Spain. She is a recipient of the 2016 Socrates Sculpture Park Emerging Artist Fellowship and an MFA candidate in the Film/Video department at Bard College; Hollander graduated Magna Cum Laude, BA, Barnard College of Columbia University, New York, NY, 2008.
